Short answer: yes, most of a mattress can be recycled, and the reason is what a mattress actually is once you take it apart. It is not one object. It is a steel mine, a foam deposit, a fiber bale, and in the case of a box spring, a small lumber yard, all stitched into one awkward rectangle.
At a mattress recycling facility, machines and hand crews strip the quilted cover, separate the foam layers, shear the fiber padding, and extract the coil unit. Each stream leaves the building in a different truck. Steel coils are baled and sold as scrap, one of the cleanest recycling loops in existence since steel remelts indefinitely. Polyurethane and memory foam are shredded and rebonded into carpet padding and cushioning products. Fibers become industrial filler and insulation. Box spring lumber gets chipped for mulch, animal bedding, or biomass fuel.
Add it up and roughly three quarters of a typical mattress by weight can be diverted from a landfill. The remaining quarter, mostly mixed textiles and adhesives, still has no good second life, which is the honest asterisk on every mattress recycling claim.
